Confirmation
Grade 3 - students take a short
"walk through" the Bible, receive their Bible and study the
introduction to Luther's Small Catechism.
They also discover how to cope with life’s unfairness and learn what God
considers the fair facts.
Grade 4 – students prepare for and
receive their first Holy Communion.
Students also study the Ten Commandments.
Grades 5 – students learn about
devotion and prayer. They also have home
visits by one of the pastors.
Grade 6 - students are introduced
to the upcoming confirmation years in grades
Grades
Grade 9 - students meet with an
adult mentor whom they have chosen, to share their faith with each other before
affirming their faith on Confirmation Sunday.
Students also write a “Faith Statement” before they are confirmed. Confirmation Sunday is in the spring.
"Service Hours" are part of our confirmation program
too. These are volunteer hours that
students perform. We keep a record of
these hours so when the students go to college or look for employment, we can
give references for them. Volunteer
hours are very important when applying for college or a job. The "Volunteer Service Hours"
record sheets are available in the classrooms, on the desk in the hallway
(upstairs), in the narthex, or ask Sandy or any other staff member. Students may begin accumulating Service Hours
in the third grade and continue until they graduate from high school.
Acolyte and Nursery
Helpers: As part of our
confirmation program, students in 7,8,9 grades help in
these areas. A schedule is set up for
them.
Babysitting: we have a list of students
who like to do babysitting. This list
is kept in the Christian Education office so we can help young parents when
they need to find a babysitter.
CONFIRMATION PROGRAM
Grades 7,8,9
Instead of our adult leaders being
called teachers…they are called Guides.
Our small group guide is a caring
person who loves God, likes kids and is willing to be involved in the Christian
growth of 6 or 7 young people for one school year. Guides commit themselves to learning, praying
and promoting Christian service with and among the young people in their
charge. Guides are responsible for
helping create an atmosphere of personal care, support and Christian
nurture. They are not responsible for
teaching the “content” of the lessons…the pastor is….but they do help process
the material that is presented within their small group.
In addition to guiding the students
in the lessons, our guides have also made the following commitment from
September through April:
1.
SERVANT EVENT: Assist their small
group in planning and carrying out service (volunteer) projects of their
choice. Each group has one Servant Event
during each session (fall and winter/spring).
2.
FELLOWSHIP ACTIVITY: Assist their
small group in fellowship events of their choice. Each group has one Fellowship Event during
each session (fall and winter/spring).
After each event, the students will
complete a short report about their activity and turn it in to the Christian
Education Director.
Our guides will also encourage
worship, pray for their students, be accepting and positive, share their faith
and try to be as understanding as possible.
This is a wonderful mentorship.
This relational model for a comprehensive Junior High Ministry is
designed to involve each youth in a meaningful environment where Christian
education, service, fellowship, music, worship and support become a natural
part of faith and life.
We ask parents to be a part of this
program. Please encourage your
son/daughter to share his/her confirmation experiences with you. We need your support as Guides. We need your support in prayer. It is important that your son/daughter attend
each week whether it be for class time or a
servant/fellowship activity.
Our Curriculum is Catechism and
Bible based. Students will need to know
the Apostle’s Creed, The Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments, as well as
Bible verses. This is part of the
Confirmation program. Parents are asked
to work with your son/daughter to be sure that these requirements are
fulfilled.
WORSHIP: We encourage you to worship God regularly
with your son/daughter.
SERVICE
HOURS:
Service Hours are a part of the
Confirmation program at
Acolyting, working in
the nursery, helping with VBS or Sunday School,
ushering, singing in the choir, participating in the musicals, service
activities that the groups do together.
Your son/daughter needs to bring a
signed sheet that describes his/her volunteer activity, or complete a “Service
Hours” form at church and turn it in to the Christian Education Director, their
guide or one of the pastors. These hours
are recorded and can be used when needed for a reference for work or college.
DURING
LENT: Students are required to attend
the Lenten Services (dramas) each Wednesday during lent. They also take worship notes. We ask parents to join their son/daughter at
these Lenten dramas….worship together as a family.
FAITH
STATEMENT: In the 9th grade,
we ask the students to write a Faith Statement. We have a guideline for this Faith
Statement. Before a student can be
confirmed, they must complete this.
MENTORS: 9th grade confirmation students
choose an adult member of our congregation to be their mentor. Before confirmation, mentors and confirmands
meet together several times to share their faith with each other. If a student needs help in choosing a
mentor, we will help them find one. This
is a great program for students and adults.
We
also encourage you, as a family, to participate in the “Family Suppers” on
Wednesday evenings at
